Intent
At Village Infants we want children to develop knowledge, skills, understanding and enjoyment around sport and physical wellbeing. We teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. PE provides children with the opportunity to develop a positive attitude towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Our curriculum will place additional focus on pupil’s fundamental movement skills such as: balancing, jogging, running, jumping, hopping, dodging, galloping and skipping and provide more opportunities for the development of object control skills such as: bouncing, throwing, catching, kicking, striking, working individually and with others.
Implementation
We aim to develop the children’s abilities through fun, enriching experiences and challenging physical education lessons where they will learn a variety of different sports from, fundamentals of PE, gymnastics, dance, athletics, invasion games, striking and fielding games yoga and fitness. Our curriculum is based around the National curriculum to ensure that all areas are met. We follow the Get Set for PE scheme alongside our own curriculum for dance which links in with the topics being taught. For example, in Year 2 they learn about the Great Fire of London, and will use dance by choosing actions and movements to retell the story. Additionally, they learn a traditional dance, country dancing, which helps pupils learn about different formations and improving rhythmic development. At Village Infants we provide a progressive curriculum so children will build on their prior knowledge and skills, and are able to develop and acquire new skills from the previous lessons which can challenge all our children. Each unit of work has key vocabulary to help support language development.
Children participate in a PE lesson once a week in Early years, and twice a week in Year 1 and 2. We also have after school clubs for children to attend. At Village we have a sport coach who comes in to encourage physical activity and teach games at lunchtimes and after school.
Alongside this, there is the opportunity to use a range of different climbing and balance equipment outside of PE lessons to help develop their skills through a range of equipment and opportunities in the outside areas across the school.
We also provide an inclusive curriculum where our children are encouraged to join in with all sessions, our teachers are able to adapt the lessons to suit the abilities of the children. Along with this, children have access to a range of different apparatus of varying heights. Some of our children have access to the inbuilt trampoline which can be accessed throughout the day, ensuring all pupils have physical activity.
PE lessons at Village Infants build character and help to embed our school values of perseverance, resilience, kindness and curiosity. In PE lessons children are encouraged to have a ‘have a go’ attitude towards new opportunities, which promotes a growth mindset.
Impact
Our PE curriculum improves the wellbeing and fitness of all children, not only through sporting skills taught, but through the values and disciplines that Physical Education promotes. Within lessons, children are assessed based on the national curriculum statements, and the Get Set for PE scheme. Pupils are able to develop self-discipline, resilience and an understanding that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility for your own health. Children are motivated to utilise these skills independently and effectively in order to live happy and healthy lives and in turn this will have a positive effect on their academic achievements and their own mental health and wellbeing. Children will have an enjoyment for sport, some of which will continue this throughout their education and beyond.
